Ebonyi Targets Road Obstructions, Urges Residents to Stop Erecting Illegal Speed Bumps

Date:

The Ebonyi State Government has issued a stern warning to individuals and communities erecting speed bumps without official approval, calling the act unlawful and damaging to public infrastructure.

According to the Commissioner for Works, Stanley Mbam, the growing trend of unapproved speed bumps on state roads poses significant safety risks and contributes to the premature wear and erosion of road surfaces. He emphasized that the Ministry has observed that many of these speed breakers are installed without necessity, often on newly constructed roads that do not require such traffic-calming measures.

Speaking to journalists, Mbam made it clear that no individual or community has the authority to alter public road structures without obtaining formal clearance from the state through the Ministry of Works.

“Any community or person that installs a speed bump without our consent is in violation of state regulations and will face appropriate sanctions,” he warned.

He urged that communities with genuine concerns about speeding should follow due process by submitting a request to the Ministry. The Ministry, he noted, would assess the site to determine if a speed bump is necessary and what type is suitable before granting approval.

The Works Commissioner also used the opportunity to call on residents to maintain their environment, especially by cleaning local drainage systems to prevent blockage and flooding.

Providing updates on ongoing infrastructure projects, Mbam disclosed that Governor Francis Nwifuru’s administration has successfully completed over 128 kilometers of road projects, many of which are awaiting commissioning.

“In truth, the cost of organizing commissioning ceremonies sometimes exceeds the actual cost of the projects themselves,” he remarked.

He reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to completing major developmental projects within the governor’s first term, particularly in rural areas, to enhance living standards and boost connectivity.
