The Ebonyi State Police Command has organised an environmental sanitation exercise and free medical outreach in Abakaliki, the state capital, as part of activities marking the 2026 National Police Week.
The initiative is aimed at strengthening police-community relations, improving environmental hygiene and promoting health awareness among residents.
Speaking during the exercise, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Ebonyi Command, SP Joshua Ukandu, said the programme is part of a nationwide effort by the Nigeria Police Force to deepen collaboration between law enforcement agencies and the communities they serve.
The environmental sanitation exercise took place simultaneously at the Ebonyi State Police Command Headquarters and the busy Sperando axis of Abakaliki, a major commercial area with heavy human and vehicular movement.
Ukandu explained that the operation focused on clearing accumulated waste and environmental hazards that could threaten public health and security.
According to him, the choice of Sperando was strategic because of its importance as a commercial hub in the city.
He noted that the large amount of refuse evacuated from the area highlights the urgent need for residents to maintain better environmental sanitation practices.
The police spokesperson warned that indiscriminate waste disposal, particularly plastics, food containers and sachet water nylons, contributes to environmental pollution and poses serious public health risks.
Alongside the sanitation exercise, the command organised a free medical outreach at the Police Officers’ Mess in Abakaliki, offering essential healthcare services to police personnel and members of the public.
The medical outreach includes screening for:
- Blood pressure
- Blood sugar levels
- HIV
- Hepatitis B
- Other routine health checks
Ukandu said the programme is designed to promote early detection and prevention of communicable and non-communicable diseases while improving the general wellbeing of both officers and residents.
He encouraged members of the public to take advantage of the opportunity to check their health status and receive professional medical advice.
As part of the week-long National Police Week activities, the Ebonyi Police Command has also scheduled a walk-a-thon across major roads in Abakaliki to promote physical fitness among officers and improve the visibility of police activities in the state.
The command will also carry out public sensitisation campaigns focusing on road safety, traffic regulation compliance and electoral integrity.
The awareness programme will engage transport operators, commuters and other stakeholders in discussions aimed at preventing electoral offences such as ballot snatching and election-related violence.
The police reiterated that the activities are part of broader efforts to strengthen community policing, public trust and civic responsibility while promoting a cleaner and healthier environment in Ebonyi State.
