Effium Crisis: Missing NELAN Engineers Were Victims of Communal Violence, Not Targeted — Umahi

Date:

The Minister of Works, David Umahi, has clarified that engineers from NELAN Consulting Engineers who went missing during the Effium crisis in Ebonyi State were casualties of the broader communal conflict, not deliberate targets.

Speaking through his media aide, Francis Nwaze, Umahi explained that the incident occurred at the peak of violent clashes between the Effium and Ezza-Effium communities, a crisis that resulted in significant loss of lives, destruction of property, and widespread insecurity across the area.

According to the statement, the engineers were among several victims affected by the unrest that engulfed Effium at the time. Authorities later arrested suspects linked to the incident, who reportedly confessed and remain in custody as legal proceedings continue.

“The Office of the Honourable Minister of Works has taken note of the protest by family members and sympathisers of the late NELAN engineers,” the statement read.

Umahi extended his condolences to the bereaved families, describing the incident as a tragic loss. He noted that during his tenure as Governor of Ebonyi State, he treated the matter with urgency and compassion.

The statement further revealed that the incident took place on November 3, 2021, during the height of the communal crisis. Upon receiving reports, the state government swiftly deployed security agencies and launched a comprehensive search and investigation to uncover the circumstances surrounding the disappearance.

Umahi was said to have personally visited the scene alongside security operatives, overseeing efforts that led to the arrest of individuals connected to the crime.

“These actions resulted in the arrest of suspects who confessed to the act and have remained in detention,” the statement added, noting that the case is still ongoing in court.

The minister emphasized that the case was neither neglected nor suppressed, as prompt investigative measures were taken and suspects were handed over for prosecution. He also highlighted that the Effium communal crisis created a volatile environment that claimed multiple innocent lives, including the engineers.

Umahi urged the public to approach discussions surrounding the incident with verified facts and respect for the ongoing judicial process. He reaffirmed his commitment to justice, transparency, and the rule of law, while praying for the repose of the victims and strength for their families.
