The wife of the Ebonyi State governor, Mary-Maudline Nwifuru, has provided financial support of N200,000 each to 13 female traders, totaling N2.6 million, to strengthen their small-scale businesses as part of activities marking International Women’s Day (IWD) 2026.
The empowerment initiative was announced on Saturday during the grand finale of the state’s IWD celebration held in Abakaliki, the Ebonyi State capital. The event was organised under the theme “Give to Gain.”
Mrs. Nwifuru explained that the beneficiaries were selected from the 13 local government areas of Ebonyi State, noting that the initiative was designed to encourage women entrepreneurs and promote economic independence among women in the state.
She stressed that women’s empowerment remains a critical driver of sustainable development, adding that supporting women in business, agriculture, governance, and enterprise will strengthen communities and improve livelihoods.
According to her, this year’s celebration focused on both social engagement and spiritual renewal, with activities in Ebonyi beginning with a prayer and fasting summit aimed at promoting healthy living and physical well-being.
Mrs. Nwifuru further stated that under the administration of Francis Nwifuru, the Ebonyi State Government has continued to create opportunities that enable women to thrive across different sectors.
She also commended the women present at the event, describing their participation as a reflection of the strength, resilience, and unity of Ebonyi women.
Representing the governor at the event, the Secretary to the State Government, Grace Umezurike, encouraged women to prioritise education and personal development, urging them to remain focused on building a better future.
Beneficiaries of the empowerment programme expressed appreciation to the First Lady for her support and commitment to improving the welfare of women across the state.
The event also featured the unveiling of “Black Diamond” magazine, which highlights activities of the Better Health for Rural Women, Children and Internally Displaced Foundation, a pet project of the First Lady aimed at improving health and welfare in rural communities.
