Residents of Nkwoagu community in Abakaliki Local Government Area of Ebonyi State have been thrown into shock following the abduction of three children by suspected human traffickers.
The victims, aged between one and two years, were reportedly taken from their residential compound after the suspects allegedly lured them with money to buy biscuits along the roadside.
Two of the abducted children—a boy and a girl—belong to the same mother, while the third child, a boy, is from another woman residing in the same compound.
One of the affected mothers, Mrs. Oluchi Nworie, alleged that the building’s landlord introduced three young women into the compound a day before the incident. According to her, the women gave the children some money under the guise of sending them to buy biscuits and later escaped with them using a tricycle, popularly known as a keke.
Confirming the incident, the Ebonyi State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Joshua Ukandu, said the matter has been formally reported and is currently under investigation.
Ukandu stated that although no arrests have been made yet, the police are intensifying efforts to track down the suspects and ensure the safe rescue of the abducted children.
“The report has been received, and a thorough investigation is ongoing to identify and apprehend those responsible, as well as secure the rescue of the children,” he said.
The incident has renewed concerns over child safety and human trafficking in parts of the state, with residents calling for increased vigilance and security within local communities.
