Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State has approved the establishment of a Nigerian Army Training Depot (NATD) in Amasiri community, Afikpo North Local Government Area, in a major move aimed at enhancing security and strengthening federal presence in the state.
The approval was disclosed during a courtesy visit to the governor by a high-ranking delegation of the Nigerian Army, led by Major General Oluremi Fadairo, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 82 Division. The meeting also had in attendance key stakeholders and traditional rulers from Afikpo.
Speaking after the engagement, Governor Nwifuru said discussions centred on deepening collaboration between the state government and the military to address security challenges and promote strategic development across Ebonyi State.
According to the governor, Amasiri has been officially designated as the host community for the new Army training facility following consultations and the consent of the Afikpo people. He confirmed that the Ebonyi State Government would allocate the required land and issue a Certificate of Occupancy (C of O) to the Nigerian Army.
“With all necessary approvals secured, preparations are in place for construction to begin without delay,” Nwifuru stated.
The governor noted that the establishment of the training depot would stimulate local economic growth, create employment opportunities, attract additional federal infrastructure, and significantly improve security operations within the state. He added that the project would also strengthen civil-military relations, promote national unity, and elevate Ebonyi State’s role in Nigeria’s security framework.
Governor Nwifuru further described the initiative as complementary to other federal projects in the state, including the ongoing construction of the Nigerian Navy School in Oferekpe Agbaja, which he said underscores Ebonyi’s growing importance as a hub for national institutions.
He commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for prioritising national security and inclusive development, while also appreciating the Nigerian Army, Afikpo traditional institutions, and other stakeholders for their cooperation in making the project a reality.
