The Ebonyi State chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) joined a nationwide protest yesterday to raise alarm over the escalating insecurity in Nigeria, accusing the Federal Government of failing to adequately protect lives and property.
Workers marched through major streets in Abakaliki, chanting solidarity songs and carrying placards with messages such as “End insecurity now,” “Protect citizens and schools,” and “Poverty fuels insecurity—create jobs, support local industries.” The demonstration was part of coordinated actions by NLC branches across the country.
Addressing the protesters, Fabian Nwigbo, Ebonyi NLC State Chairman, stressed that insecurity now affects everyone—students, workers, farmers, travellers, and even security personnel. He lamented that the government’s priority seems skewed toward political ambitions rather than safeguarding citizens, stating that “nobody is safe anymore in Ebonyi or across Nigeria.”
The protest also saw participation from affiliated unions, including the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), led locally by Samson Nwafor. The labour union reiterated its demand for urgent government intervention to restore peace and protect lives and property in Ebonyi State.
This demonstration in Ebonyi reflects growing frustration among residents over terrorism, kidnappings, banditry, and incessant killings affecting communities and livelihoods.
