Tragedy struck the Ebonyi State Police Command on Wednesday as an Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Ogbon-Inu Taiwo Popoola, reportedly collapsed and died during a management meeting at the command headquarters in Abakaliki.
According to sources within the command, the incident occurred at about 10:30 a.m. while senior officers were holding a meeting in the office of the Commissioner of Police. The senior police officer was said to have suddenly developed breathing difficulties and began gasping for air.
He was immediately rushed to the Police Clinic at the headquarters, where medical personnel made efforts to revive him. Unfortunately, those efforts were unsuccessful.
The remains of the late ACP were later transferred to the Alex Ekwueme Federal University Teaching Hospital (AE-FUTHA 1) mortuary in Abakaliki.
Confirming the development, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Ebonyi State Command, SP Joshua Ukandu, described the death as a huge loss to the command.
He explained that ACP Popoola, who was in charge of the State Intelligence Department (SID), suddenly took ill during the meeting and was promptly given medical attention.
Despite swift intervention by medical doctors, he was confirmed dead.
The police spokesperson added that the late officer was known for his dedication, professionalism, and commitment to duty throughout his years of service in the Nigeria Police Force.
The incident has cast a pall of grief over the Ebonyi State Police Command, as colleagues and officers mourn the sudden loss of a senior and respected officer.
