Ebonyi Governor Approves ₦150,000 Christmas Bonus for Civil Servants

Date:

Ebonyi State Governor, Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, has approved a ₦150,000 Christmas bonus for all civil servants in the state as part of efforts to cushion the impact of the 2025 festive season.

The governor made the announcement on Sunday during a church service at the Government House Chapel, Abakaliki, according to a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Monday Uzor.

Governor Nwifuru said the Christmas bonus underscores his administration’s commitment to workers’ welfare, despite the economic strain caused by declining state revenue over the past year. He noted that civil servants remain central to the implementation of government policies and deserve support, especially during the festive period.

While addressing the congregation, the governor also dismissed reports suggesting delays in the construction of the Vincent Agwu Nwankwo Flyover, describing such claims as misleading.

According to him, the flyover project is one of the most ambitious infrastructural developments currently underway in Nigeria and requires careful, technical execution. He assured residents that the project is progressing steadily and will significantly enhance the state’s urban outlook and economic appeal upon completion.

Governor Nwifuru further criticised what he described as misinformation circulating on social media, stressing that the project is not driven by surplus funds but by the administration’s desire to leave a lasting legacy of modern infrastructure and good governance in Ebonyi State.

In August, the governor approved a ₦20,000 increase in the state minimum wage, raising civil servants’ monthly pay to ₦90,000. The wage adjustment, which took immediate effect, aligns with his administration’s People’s Charter of Needs Agenda.

At the national level, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu signed the new Minimum Wage Act into law in July 2024, increasing the national minimum wage from ₦30,000 to ₦70,000 following extensive negotiations with labour unions and other stakeholders. However, implementation across states remains uneven.
