The Ebonyi State Government has taken decisive action against unauthorized structures at the Integrated Building Materials Market along the Abakaliki–Afikpo Highway, Abakaliki.
Professor Nwogo Ajuka Obasi, Commissioner for Market Development and Parks, stated that repeated directives for owners to remove the illegal structures went unheeded. He emphasized that no individual, regardless of political influence or social status, is above the law, warning that violators will face strict enforcement.
Obasi added that the state government is committed to maintaining organized and modern markets. “Markets across Ebonyi must adhere to approved layouts, or risk demolition and other penalties,” he said.
During a media briefing after the demolition, Obasi confirmed that the Ministry, in collaboration with the Ebonyi State Market Board led by Rt. Hon. Ikechukwu Nwankwo, issued multiple notices urging traders to dismantle unapproved structures voluntarily. Security agencies were notified in advance to ensure enforcement and compliance.
Hon. Sunday Inyima, Commissioner for Capital City Development, also condemned traders for constructing illegal buildings and reminded them to seek proper approval before any construction in the state capital. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to safety, order, and environmental standards across all markets and commercial areas in Ebonyi State.
Officials present during the exercise included the Chairman and members of the Ebonyi State Market Development Board: Rt. Hon. Ikechukwu Nwankwo, Solomon Nwafor, Chinedu Nwoye, Friday Nwakpa, Daniel Okwuegbu, Barr. Chima, and Mr. Odo Gabriel Oyibe, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Market Development and Parks.
This enforcement aligns with the state’s ongoing efforts to modernize markets, ensure compliance with urban planning regulations, and promote a safer, more organized trading environment.
