A Federal High Court in Abakaliki on Tuesday invalidated the 2024 local government elections in Ebonyi State, effectively removing the 13 council chairmen and their councillors from office. The court ruled that the elections were unconstitutional and did not comply with the provisions of the Electoral Act.
The Ebonyi State Independent Electoral Commission (EBSIEC) conducted the elections, which the court found to be in breach of the legal electoral framework. This decision follows a similar ruling on the August 2022 elections, which were also nullified for procedural irregularities.
The court’s judgment underscores ongoing concerns over adherence to electoral laws in Ebonyi State, raising questions about the conduct and transparency of local government polls.
