Ebonyi Residents Stay Indoors as #FreeNnamdiKanu Protest Paralyzes Business Activities

Date:

Commercial and business operations came to a halt across Abakaliki, the Ebonyi State capital, on Monday following widespread compliance with the #FreeNnamdiKanu protest demanding the release of IPOB leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

Banks, markets, and several business establishments remained closed as traders, civil servants, and residents stayed indoors, fearing possible unrest. Although the Centenary City State Secretariat was officially open, most workers deserted the premises.

Similarly, the Abakaliki International Market, Mechanics Village, and Spare Parts Market were opened but saw no activity as traders avoided their shops. Streets in the metropolis witnessed minimal vehicular movement, with only a few commercial vehicles, motorcycles, and tricycles operating. Many commuters resorted to trekking to their destinations.

When contacted, the Ebonyi State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Joshua Ukandu, confirmed that Abakaliki and other parts of the state remained peaceful. He stated that security personnel had been deployed across strategic locations to prevent any breakdown of law and order.

“The situation in Ebonyi is calm. Our patrol teams are on ground to ensure safety and maintain peace. No incident of attack or disturbance has been reported so far,” Ukandu said.

He urged residents to go about their lawful duties without fear, assuring that the police were fully prepared to protect lives and property throughout the state.

The #FreeNnamdiKanu protest continues to gain traction in parts of the South-East, with demonstrators calling for the immediate release of the detained IPOB leader, whose incarceration has sparked recurring sit-at-home actions and disruptions across the region.
