The Chairman of Abakaliki Local Government Area in Ebonyi State, Mr. Stephen Ebere Nwogha, has called for the inclusion of the National Identification Number (NIN) as part of the requirements for renting apartments within the council area.Nwogha made the suggestion while presenting his two-year stewardship report, noting that the initiative would help strengthen local security and reduce crime.
Nwogha made this known during the presentation of his two-year stewardship report on Wednesday in Abakaliki.
According to him, the new directive is part of the local government’s ongoing efforts to curb criminal activities and enhance community security. He emphasized that the policy would help law enforcement agencies track criminal elements and safeguard residents.
“The NIN requirement is a proactive step to ensure that everyone living within the council is properly identified,” Nwogha said. “We’re working closely with security agencies including the police and army to reduce crime in Abakaliki.”
He explained that the council is already working closely with the Nigeria Police Force, the Nigerian Army, and other relevant security agencies to sustain peace and order across the area.
Nwogha added that the local government’s security team would collaborate with landlords and property owners to ensure full compliance with the new directive, emphasizing that proper identification helps deter criminal hideouts and illegal occupants.
The Abakaliki council boss reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to the safety and well-being of residents, noting that security remains a top priority for sustainable development in Ebonyi State.
