Ebonyi Government Bans Illegal Motor Parks in Abakaliki

Date:

The Ebonyi State Government, under the leadership of Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, has announced a total ban on all illegal motor parks operating within Abakaliki, the state capital. The enforcement of this directive will begin on Monday, September 15, 2025.

The Commissioner for Capital City and Urban Development, Chief Sunday Elechi Inyima, disclosed the development after a joint meeting with key stakeholders, including the Commissioners for Transport, Market and Park Development, Environment, and the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Transport.

According to Chief Inyima, the decision is part of ongoing efforts to regulate transportation in Ebonyi, restore order in public spaces, and enhance urban development in the capital city.

“All illegal parks within Abakaliki will be shut down. Beginning Monday, the government will use various media platforms to inform the public about the approved motor parks. Any loading points outside these designated parks will not be tolerated,” he stated.

He further explained that bus shelters in the city were designed as waiting points for commuters, not as loading bays, noting that indiscriminate loading at unauthorized locations has been a major cause of traffic disorder in Abakaliki.

The government-approved motor parks in Ebonyi State include:

  • Eze Igboke Ewa Central Park (opposite Margaret Umahi International Market)
  • Chris Nwankwo Park (formerly Ishieke Park)
  • Akanu Ibiam Park (also known as Building Materials Park)
  • EBOTRANS Terminal

Chief Inyima assured residents and transport operators that more details on the enforcement exercise would be made public soon.
