The State of Electricity Supply in Ebonyi: Is there any Improvement?

Date:

For years, electricity supply has been one of the most stubborn challenges in Ebonyi State. Entire communities are left in darkness for months, sometimes years, while even urban areas continue to wrestle with low voltage and endless outages. Yet in recent months, faint signs of progress have begun to show—though these are uneven and far from the steady light many residents dream of.

Ikwo, the state’s largest local government area, remains a symbol of this paradox. While certain communities have seen small interventions like transformer donations and even a solar hybrid mini-grid in Eka-Awoke, vast stretches of the LGA still know only darkness. For the majority of households in Ikwo, “no light” is not a passing phrase but a daily reality. This contrast underscores the uneven spread of electricity across the state: one village may catch a glimpse of progress while its neighbors remain in blackout.

Afikpo, on the other hand, is living a different story. After more than a decade of waiting, the people there are on the verge of reconnecting to the national grid. The Ebonyi State Government’s ₦208 million investment in new transformers and the construction of the Amasiri substation has brought the dream of public power closer than ever. Most of the installations are ready, with only the reconnection of displaced high-voltage lines standing in the way of restoration. For Afikpo, the light at the end of the tunnel is no longer just a metaphor.

The state capital, Abakaliki, has also seen some improvement. In January, the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company commissioned a new feeder line at Azuiyiokwu. For residents used to voltage that could barely power a bulb, this additional feeder promises greater stability and fewer blackouts. Coupled with the Transmission Company of Nigeria’s expansion at the New Haven substation in Enugu, Ebonyi is slowly gaining access to a stronger bulk power supply. But here again lies the familiar challenge: what arrives in bulk at the regional level rarely translates into consistent power for the ordinary household.

Beyond these, the government has also unveiled an ambitious plan at Ezzamgbo in Ohaukwu Local Government Area, where an industrial city is under construction. The project is designed to run on constant and sustainable power through independent energy solutions, ensuring that businesses in the hub will not be crippled by the kind of outages that have long frustrated the rest of the state. If realized, this could mark a new model for energy security in Ebonyi—one that prioritizes industrial growth and reliability.

Despite these glimmers of hope, Ebonyi’s power story is still riddled with obstacles. Vandalism remains a major setback—cables and transformers are stolen or destroyed, plunging neighborhoods back into darkness. Unfinished projects like the Amasiri substation are reminders of promises yet to be fulfilled. Revenue collection is weak, making it harder for distribution companies to maintain or expand services. And most telling of all, places like Ikwo remain trapped in blackouts, with progress moving at a snail’s pace.

There is no doubt that electricity supply in Ebonyi today is better than it was yesterday. Afikpo’s near reconnection, Abakaliki’s new feeder, and the boost from New Haven are tangible steps forward. But the journey is unfinished. For now, Ebonyi’s power situation can best be described as progress in motion: visible, measurable, but still painfully incomplete.
