The Ebonyi State Government has approved an Executive Bill for the establishment of the Education Development Trust Fund, a strategic move aimed at strengthening basic education and creating a sustainable funding structure.
The approval, which aligns with the Federal Ministry of Education’s directive, was announced by the State Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Ikeuwa Omebeh, after the State Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Francis Nwifuru in Abakaliki.
According to Omebeh, the bill has been forwarded to the Ebonyi State House of Assembly for legislative consideration. Once passed, the fund will serve as a dedicated financing mechanism to sustainably mobilize both public and private resources to enhance basic education in Ebonyi.
He noted that the proposed Education Development Trust Fund will draw contributions from diverse sources including government taxes, development partners, corporate organizations, and well-meaning indigenes. These resources will be directed towards critical areas such as classroom rehabilitation, ICT integration, teacher training, WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene), scholarships, school feeding, and transport systems.
“The Fund will provide a credible and sustainable solution to Ebonyi’s education challenges by ensuring transparent governance, joint planning, and strong oversight,” Omebeh explained.
The initiative is also expected to address long-standing gaps in the state’s education sector by constructing fences, toilets, and boreholes, as well as strengthening security measures in schools.
When fully implemented, the Ebonyi Education Development Trust Fund will mark a transformative step in human capital development, offering every child in the state access to a more conducive and supportive learning environment.
