Simon Ekpa, a Nigerian-Finnish lawyer and political activist originally from Ohaukwu Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, has been sentenced to six years in prison by the Päijät-Häme District Court in Finland. Ekpa was convicted on charges of participation in a terrorist organization, public incitement to commit crimes for terrorist purposes, and aggravated tax fraud.
Ekpa, born on March 21, 1985, is the son of King Nwangbo, the Ogaba Idu of the Ngbo clan in Ebonyi State. He gained prominence as a former athlete and later as a political activist advocating for the independence of Biafra. In 2022, he declared the activation of the Biafra Government In Exile (BGIE), and in 2023, he assumed the title of Prime Minister of the Biafra Republic Government In Exile (BRGIE).
According to Finnish authorities, Ekpa used his social media influence to incite violence and mobilize support for separatist activities in Southeast Nigeria between August 2021 and November 2024. He was also accused of supplying weapons and explosives to armed groups operating in the region.
Ekpa denied all charges during the trial. Legal experts note that the verdict can still be appealed to a higher court. Meanwhile, the Nigerian government has expressed approval of Finland’s judicial process and is reportedly in discussions regarding potential extradition for further prosecution in Nigeria.
This case marks a significant development in the monitoring of cross-border terrorism and the role of diaspora figures in influencing local conflicts.
