Governor of Ebonyi State, Rt. Hon. Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, has called on the Committee for the Review of the Laws of the Federation to develop a body of laws that safeguard citizens’ dignity, encourage innovation, and strengthen the foundations of justice across Nigeria.
The governor made this appeal in a goodwill message delivered at the 3rd Retreat of the Committee held in Abakaliki, the Ebonyi State capital.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had earlier approved the inauguration of the Committee, with a mandate to review existing laws, consolidate them, and eliminate obsolete provisions that no longer serve the Nigerian people.
Governor Nwifuru expressed optimism that clearer, modern, and just laws would pave the way for greater national progress.
“The laws you review and revise will shape the destiny of generations yet unborn. You are building a legal framework that must empower citizens, protect freedoms, foster economic growth, and guarantee fairness to all,” he stated.
Highlighting his administration’s commitment to aligning state reforms with national and global standards, Nwifuru commended the choice of Ebonyi as the venue for the retreat.
“By choosing Ebonyi as the venue for this retreat, the Ministry has affirmed that our state is not only part of the national conversation but also a partner in shaping the future of justice in Nigeria,” he noted.
The governor further urged participants to approach deliberations with foresight, courage, and inclusivity, while ensuring debates rise above technicalities.
The retreat is being attended by the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Princess Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), alongside members of the Body of States Attorneys-General, led by the Attorney General of Ebonyi State, Dr. Ben Odoh.
