The Nigerian Institute of Building (NIOB) has commenced its 55th Builders’ Conference and Annual General Meeting in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, with a strong focus on strengthening building standards, professional competence, and sustainable infrastructure across Nigeria.
The conference, themed “Advancing Builders’ Knowledge and Skills for Effective Enforcement of Building Regulatory Laws for Sustainable Development,” has drawn builders, policymakers, and industry leaders from across the country. Discussions will address recurring challenges in the construction sector, including building collapses, regulatory gaps, and inadequate professional training.
Speaking at the opening, stakeholders stressed the need for competent enforcement of building codes, promotion of professionalism, and the adoption of eco-friendly and resilient construction practices that align with Nigeria’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Hosting the event in Ebonyi carries symbolic significance, as the state is governed by Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, Nigeria’s first Builder-Governor with over two decades of experience in the profession. His leadership, participants noted, highlights the impact of technical expertise in governance and infrastructure delivery.
Beyond technical discussions, the 55th Builders’ Conference is expected to bring economic and social benefits to Ebonyi. The influx of delegates, professionals, and investors will boost local hospitality, trade, and business engagements, while showcasing Abakaliki’s growing infrastructure and development strides.
Organizers described the conference as a landmark event for Nigeria’s construction industry, positioning builders at the forefront of national development, ethical practice, and sustainable growth.
