Former Governor of Ebonyi State, Martin Nwanchor Elechi, has urged politicians from the state and beyond to prioritise selfless service over personal ambition, stressing that true leadership is measured by sacrifice and integrity.
Elechi made this known during an impromptu visit to Hon. Chinedu Ogah, the member representing Ikwo/Ezza South Federal Constituency at the House of Representatives. The elder statesman praised Ogah for his quality representation, describing him as a “worthy political son” of Ebonyi.
According to Elechi, public service is a higher calling that demands commitment, and the joy of serving people surpasses material wealth. He reminded leaders that “a good name outlives riches and personal achievements.”
Reflecting on his political journey, Elechi recalled how he groomed many young leaders from Ebonyi who are now excelling, including David Umahi, current Minister of Works. Despite resistance from established politicians at the time, Elechi appointed Umahi as caretaker chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ebonyi before choosing him as deputy governor in 2011.
Speaking further, the elder statesman encouraged Ogah to continue as a good ambassador of NdiEbonyi, while praying that his namesake, Martin Chinedu-Ogah, would also follow the footsteps of great leaders from the state.
Elechi’s remarks reaffirm his enduring influence in Ebonyi politics, especially in raising a generation of leaders who continue to shape the state’s political landscape.
