The Ebonyi State Ministry of Aviation and Transport Technology has begun final preparations of the Chuba Okadigbo International Airport, including staff training and the installation of airline traffic lights.
Commissioner for Aviation and Transport Technology, Mrs. Ngozi Obichukwu, made this known on Tuesday while speaking to journalists in Abakaliki, shortly after appearing before the State House of Assembly Committee on Public Accounts.
She praised the unwavering support of Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, noting that his administration has remained focused on making the airport operational and sustainable.
“When committees like this invite us, it reminds us to stay accountable and transparent,” Obichukwu said. “They acknowledged today that aviation is one of the most complex and capital-intensive ministries. Yet, they’re pleased with our efforts, especially in promoting flight movement.”
She confirmed that staff training will commence shortly, and the ministry is preparing to commission the airline traffic light system—an essential upgrade that will enable evening flights, which are currently limited.
“Once the traffic lights are installed, flight operations can extend into the night, which is a major step forward for us,” she added.
On the status of the Ebonyi Airline PLC, Obichukwu explained that documentation with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) is being finalized—a key requirement for securing an Air Transport License.
“The CAC process isn’t just for the airline itself but also involves affiliated companies and board members. Even non-corporate individuals involved must provide their PAYE tax documentation. It’s resource-intensive, but we’re progressing,” she said.
She also revealed that the ministry has completed security clearance with the Department of State Services (DSS) and consultations with the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), bringing the state closer to license approval.
“Once the Air Transport License is granted, aircraft acquisition can proceed—but that’s not a simple market purchase,” she noted. “Experts from aviation authorities like FAAN and NCAA will inspect the aircraft to ensure compliance with safety standards.”
Obichukwu reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to supervising the airport’s development and ensuring it meets all operational standards, adding, “We are making sure the airport does not fail.”
