Ebonyi Lawyers Luke Nkwegu and Fidelis Iteshi Inaugurated as Senior Advocates of Nigeria

Date:

Two prominent Ebonyi-born legal professionals, Barr. Luke Ogbaga Nkwegu and Barr. Fidelis Iteshi, have officially joined the ranks of Nigeria’s most elite lawyers following their inauguration as Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SAN).

The ceremony, held on Monday, July 29, 2025, at the Supreme Court Complex in Abuja, was overseen by Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun. Nkwegu and Iteshi were among 57 lawyers conferred with the SAN title, following a thorough selection process by the Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee (LPPC).

Their elevation has sparked widespread celebration across Ebonyi State, with many describing it as a landmark achievement for the state’s legal representation on the national stage.

Barr. Luke Nkwegu, an indigene of the Izzi clan, becomes one of the first SANs from his ethnic group, while Barr. Fidelis Iteshi, from Idembia in Ezza South LGA, makes history as the first Senior Advocate of Nigeria from Ebonyi Central and the Ezza community.

Both men earned the honour after decades of distinguished legal practice, noted for their professionalism, advocacy skills, and contributions to Nigeria’s justice system. Their elevation is seen as an inspiration to young legal practitioners, especially those from underrepresented communities in the Southeast.

The Governor of Ebonyi State, Rt. Hon. Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, also joined in celebrating the feat. In an official message released by his Chief Press Secretary, Dr. Monday Uzor, the Governor described the conferment as “well-earned,” acknowledging their hard work, brilliance, and unwavering commitment to the legal profession.

“You have brought pride to the people of Ebonyi, and your recognition as SANs sets a powerful example for aspiring lawyers in our state and beyond,” Governor Nwifuru stated.

Now fully inducted, Nkwegu and Iteshi join the exclusive circle of legal practitioners entitled to wear the silk gown, sit in reserved positions in court, and take up more advanced roles in litigation and legal development.

Their emergence further strengthens Ebonyi State’s presence in the legal profession, marking a new era for law and leadership from the region.
