Ebonyi State Governor, Rt. Hon. Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, has declared that appropriate disciplinary measures will be taken against the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Professor Grace Umezuruike, if she is found guilty of misappropriating N1.5 billion meant for the purchase of rice for citizens during the 2024 Christmas season.
The allegation surfaced following a petition filed by a civil advocate, Nwoba Chika Nwoba, to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The petition accused the SSG of diverting the allocated funds into her personal account.
Reports indicate that the EFCC has already secured a court order from a Federal High Court in Uyo for the interim forfeiture of the said amount to the Federal Government pending further investigation.
Speaking during a Sunday church service in Abakaliki, Governor Nwifuru responded to the issue, emphasizing his commitment to due process.
“I am aware of the publication and the matter currently before the Federal High Court in Uyo regarding our SSG. While the allegations are serious, we must respect the legal principle that an accused person remains innocent until proven guilty,” he said.
Governor Nwifuru, who has a legal background, stressed the importance of allowing investigations and judicial processes to conclude before taking final action.
He further revealed that a performance evaluation of government appointees is ongoing. According to him, some officials have failed to meet expectations outlined in the administration’s People’s Charter of Needs.
“The inability of certain appointees to fulfill their responsibilities prompted the recent minor cabinet reshuffle,” he stated. “Our administration’s mission is clear, and we are committed to delivering on our promises. Those who continue to underperform will be relieved of their duties if there’s no improvement after the grace period.”
Governor Nwifuru reaffirmed his administration’s focus on accountability, transparency, and service delivery, urging all officials to remain aligned with the goals of the people.
