Two Ebonyi Women Rescued as Police Bust Human Trafficking Syndicates in Enugu, Anambra, and Ondo

Date:

The Nigeria Police Force has announced the dismantling of two major human trafficking syndicates operating across Enugu, Anambra, and Ondo States, leading to the arrest of eleven suspects and the rescue of several victims—including two pregnant women from Ebonyi State. The women were reportedly held with the intent of harvesting their newborns for illegal sale, a disturbing revelation that has triggered fresh concerns about the vulnerability of young women in the state.

According to a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Muyiwa Adejobi, the raids followed credible intelligence and were executed by operatives from Zone 13 and the Ondo State Police Command. In the course of the operation, a deeply rooted baby factory was uncovered between Enugu and Anambra, where eight suspects, including Uzoamaka Ani (27), Joy Madu (52), and Victoria Onodu Akasike (56), were arrested. The suspects allegedly confessed to child trafficking, illegal adoption, and operating unregistered medical centres posing as clinics. A seven-month-old baby and a four-year-old child were also rescued, alongside the two Ebonyi women who are now receiving medical and psychological care in a secure facility.

In a separate but related operation, the Ondo State Police Command responded to a petition from the Interpol Liaison Office at Force Headquarters, Abuja, and rescued a Ghanaian national, David Angerinya, who had been trafficked into Nigeria under false pretences. Three suspects linked to an international trafficking ring—Hayford Nyamekye, Awine Alex, and Kojo Felix—were arrested.

Further investigations uncovered thirty-nine other Ghanaian nationals living in squalid conditions without valid documents. Authorities confirmed that the victims had been misled with fake job offers and promises of international travel, mostly to Canada.

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, commended the professionalism of the officers involved in both operations. He reiterated the Police Force’s zero tolerance for human trafficking, child exploitation, and cross-border criminal activity. He also urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity, especially in rural communities where many victims are often targeted.

The rescue of two Ebonyi indigenes in such a high-profile operation has renewed calls for increased community education and policy efforts to curb trafficking in the state. As investigations continue, law enforcement agencies have vowed to deepen surveillance and bring all collaborators to justice.
