Ebonyi Monarchs Banish Town Union President for 10 Years, Demand ₦300 Million Fine

Date:

The traditional rulers of Ekoli Edda community in Afikpo South Local Government Area of Ebonyi State have announced the 10-year banishment of the town union president, Mr. Kalu Ama Mba, following his alleged involvement in the unrest destabilizing the area.

In a resolution reached after an emergency meeting, the royal council accused Mr. Mba of complicity in the communal crisis and held him partly responsible for the ongoing destruction of property and loss of lives linked to violent groups operating in the community.

The monarchs also imposed a ₦300 million fine and ordered the presentation of a native cow for cleansing rituals, which must be fulfilled after the expiration of the ban.

Their decision was communicated in an official statement signed by HRH Etta Egor Akanu (Chairman of Ekoli Edda Traditional Council), HRH Peter Ibeze, HRH Dick Ibiam Ama, HRH Egbeke Idika, and Chief Thomas Ama.

According to the statement, the community has experienced recurring violence since Mba assumed leadership of the town union, and several individuals have allegedly been killed by a faction known as the Catcham boys, who are believed to operate with impunity and the president’s backing.

The monarchs called for Mba’s immediate removal from office, describing his tenure as one that has brought instability and bloodshed to the once peaceful community.

They emphasized that the sanctions imposed were necessary to restore order, ensure accountability, and begin the process of healing and reconciliation in Ekoli Edda.
