The Governor of Ebonyi State, Rt. Hon. Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, has strongly condemned the recent killing of thirteen (13) Ebonyi indigenes in Ogboji, located in Orumba South Local Government Area of Anambra State.
According to reports, the victims—residents of the community—were attacked and fatally shot during their routine town union meeting held two Mondays ago. The gruesome nature of the incident has sent shockwaves through the state and beyond.
Reacting to the development in an official press statement, Governor Nwifuru described the killings as “inhumane, senseless, and a clear affront to peace, human dignity, and societal order.”
“It is unthinkable that innocent citizens, peacefully gathered for a meeting, could be ambushed and gunned down at close range. This wickedness must not go unpunished,” the Governor stated.
He confirmed making immediate contact with the Governor of Anambra State, Prof. Charles Chukwuma Soludo, urging him to direct a full-scale, transparent investigation into the matter. Governor Nwifuru emphasized the importance of swift justice and warned that failure to apprehend the culprits could strain inter-state relations.
“We expect the Anambra State Government and security agencies to act decisively. Any delay or compromise in this case could threaten the brotherly bond between our states,” he noted.
In the wake of the tragedy, Governor Nwifuru called on Ebonyi citizens—especially the affected families—not to retaliate or take the law into their own hands. He appealed for calm and patience as the relevant authorities conduct investigations.
“Such horrific acts have no place in a civilized society. The full weight of the law will be deployed to bring those behind this massacre to justice,” he assured.
The Governor reaffirmed his administration’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding the lives and properties of all Ebonyians, both within and outside the state.
“There will be no sacred cows. We are committed to ensuring that this matter is followed to a logical conclusion and that justice is not denied,” he concluded.
