The Ebonyi State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has announced the seizure of a total of 91.768 kilograms of cannabis sativa and various psychotropic substances from January to date.
Speaking during a press briefing in Abakaliki as part of the activities to mark the 2025 United Nations International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, the State Commander, Mr. Okechukwu Nkere, highlighted the agency’s significant progress in combating drug-related crimes across the state.
This year’s observance, themed “The Evidence is Clear; Invest in Prevention,” focused on raising awareness and promoting proactive strategies to curb drug abuse in society.
According to Nkere, a total of 212 suspects—comprising 169 males and 43 females—were arrested in connection with various drug-related offenses. The command also secured seven convictions and provided treatment and rehabilitation for seven individuals, while 11 others are currently undergoing recovery programs.
“In addition to arrests and seizures, we’ve offered brief counseling interventions to 104 persons, including 83 males and 21 females, to help them resist the lure of drug abuse,” Nkere noted.
The NDLEA also extended its drug education and public sensitization efforts to schools, religious institutions, and communities across the three senatorial zones of Ebonyi State.
Nkere urged the general public, especially young people, to stay away from drugs, emphasizing that illicit drug use has no positive outcome for individuals or society.
He also expressed appreciation to the Ebonyi State Government and relevant stakeholders for their continued support in the fight against substance abuse and trafficking.
