The Ebonyi State House of Assembly has directed the immediate shutdown of all illegal quarry mining sites operating within the state until they meet the required mining and safety standards.
This decision followed an oversight visit by the House Committee on Solid Mineral Development to quarry sites in Ezza Inyimagu, located in Izzi Local Government Area.
The committee also issued a summons to the operators of these illegal quarries, requesting their appearance before the House on Thursday, 26th June 2025, to provide explanations for their activities.
Speaking during the visit, Hon. Ifeanyi Nwakpu, Chairman of the Committee, expressed serious concern over the operations of several quarry companies that lack proper registration, display no official signage, and fail to implement basic safety measures. He further condemned the alleged use of underage children from nearby communities in dangerous work environments.
Hon. Nwakpu criticized these companies for working against the vision of Governor Francis Ogbonnia Nwifuru, who has prioritized quality education in the state and invested heavily in ensuring access for every child.
“Exposing school-age children to hazardous working conditions is completely unacceptable. It undermines the government’s commitment to education and child protection,” Nwakpu stated.
As a result, the committee mandated that all illegal quarry activities be suspended immediately until the operators fully comply with Ebonyi State’s mining and safety regulations.
On a positive note, the committee commended China Geo Engineering Company (CGC), which operates legally in Ezza Inyimagu. The company was praised for adhering to safety standards, as workers were seen using appropriate protective equipment and following legal procedures.
Hon. Nwakpu, who represents Ikwo North Constituency, urged other quarry operators to follow CGC’s example and adopt best practices.
Also speaking, Hon. Friday Ogbuewu, representing Ezza South Constituency, highlighted that the oversight mission was aimed at safeguarding the interests of the government, host communities, and businesses while fostering a safe and productive operating environment.
In his response, Mr. Titus Dominic, Manager of CGC, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to upholding all applicable laws, including the payment of Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) and delivering on its corporate social responsibilities.
The committee emphasized its dedication to ensuring that all mining operations in Ebonyi State align with legal, safety, and environmental standards.
