Lassa Fever Outbreak: Ebonyi Joins Nigeria’s Top 5 Hotspots in 2025 – NCDC

Date:

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has listed Ebonyi State among the top five states with the highest number of confirmed Lassa fever cases in Nigeria since the start of 2025. This was disclosed in the agency’s Week 21 Epidemiological Report published on its official website.

So far, Nigeria has recorded 739 confirmed cases and 141 deaths from Lassa fever, bringing the case fatality rate to 19.1%. This marks a slight rise compared to the 18.1% fatality rate reported around the same period last year.

According to the data, Ondo leads with 30% of all confirmed cases nationwide, followed by Bauchi with 25%, then Edo and Taraba with 16% each, while Ebonyi contributes 3% of the national figure. In exact terms, Ebonyi State has confirmed 22 cases as of the time of this report.

Other affected states include Kogi with 15 cases, Gombe with 14, Plateau 13, Benue 11, and Nasarawa with five. States like Kaduna and Enugu reported three cases each, Delta and Cross River two each, while Borno, Ogun, Anambra, and the Federal Capital Territory recorded one confirmed case apiece.

No healthcare worker was infected during the most recent reporting week, although 22 health workers across the country have contracted the virus since the beginning of the year.

As Ebonyi battles to contain the virus, health authorities are calling for increased awareness, early reporting of symptoms, and improved sanitation, especially in rodent-prone environments.
