A couple residing in Abakaliki, the capital of Ebonyi State, has been arrested by the Ebonyi State Police Command for allegedly assaulting a widow, Mrs. Cynthia Amauche Ucha, by pouring hot water on her.
The suspects, identified as Mr. Chigozie and his wife, Mrs. Ginika Chigozie, were said to have attacked the victim following a verbal altercation that escalated at Akidi Street, where they all reside.
According to the victim’s sister, Miss Ozioma Ucha, the disagreement initially began between Mrs. Ginika and her sister but quickly escalated when Mr. Chigozie, his children, and his brother-in-law allegedly joined in and physically assaulted the widow.
Miss Ozioma alleged that the family beat the widow with clubs and other harmful objects. In the midst of the attack, Mrs. Ginika reportedly poured boiling water on the already-injured woman.
She further revealed that her sister had previously received threats from the Chigozie family and had tried to keep a low profile since moving into the compound.
“Despite living quietly, my sister has suffered constant harassment. Instead of allowing her to mourn in peace, they chose to worsen her pain with this brutal act,” said.

The accused individuals have reportedly been transferred from the Central Police Station to the SWAT division at the Police Headquarters in Abakaliki for further investigation.
Attempts to get a statement from the Ebonyi State Police Public Relations Officer, Joshua Ukandu, were unsuccessful, as calls and messages went unanswered.
