The Ebonyi State Broadcasting Corporation (EBBC) has undergone a remarkable transformation after years of neglect, a shift credited to the proactive leadership of Governor Francis Nwifuru. His administration’s focus on digital transformation in Ebonyi has turned a once-dormant state media into a fully functional and modern broadcasting powerhouse.
According to Comrade Tony Nwizi, Director General of EBBC, the radio and television arms of the station were practically non-functional when he took over. Speaking with reporters in Abakaliki, Nwizi revealed that the television station had remained off-air for years, while the radio service operated with outdated equipment, making transmission highly epileptic.
“Before now, we operated with a 0.7-kilowatt transmitter—not even up to one kilowatt—which severely limited our coverage. Today, through Governor Nwifuru’s intervention, we now operate on three kilowatts and are ready to maximize the full five-kilowatt capacity,” Nwizi explained.
He added that the state now boasts one of the tallest broadcasting masts in Nigeria, standing at 3,300 meters (about 1,500 feet), rivaled only by that of BC Umuahia. This upgrade has drastically improved the station’s signal strength, allowing listeners in places like Onitsha, Lagos, and even Southern Cameroon to access Ebonyi State radio services clearly.
The revamp of Nigerian state media, especially in Ebonyi, showcases how leadership vision can directly impact public institutions. Nwizi attributed this success to Governor Nwifuru’s deep understanding of the state’s needs, stemming from his eight years of experience as Speaker of the State House of Assembly.
“Governor Nwifuru is not a newcomer to governance. He knew the challenges we were facing and acted fast to ensure Ebonyi State had a truly digitalized broadcasting system,” Nwizi said.
He also highlighted several of the governor’s broader achievements, including the payment of backlogged gratuities to retirees, employment of civil servants and medical professionals, provision of ambulances and official vehicles to doctors, and the procurement of hospital consumables across general hospitals.
In terms of transportation, the administration has revitalized Ebotrans, introduced EboCab to streamline commuting, and procured compressed natural gas (CNG) buses for civil servants, reinforcing the state’s commitment to green mobility and workforce welfare.
Governor Nwifuru’s achievements in Ebonyi extend beyond media and healthcare. His administration has initiated the construction of two new universities, delivered road projects across all political wards, developed a functional airport runway, and provided modern duplexes to traditional rulers—elevating the infrastructure landscape of the state.
What was once considered a collapsing institution has now become a symbol of progress and innovation, all under the guidance of a leader focused on sustainable development and inclusive governance in Ebonyi State.
