Project Delays and Political Assumptions? Nwifuru’s ‘Six Years’ Remark Under Scrutiny

Date:

A recent statement by Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru has stirred conversations across Ebonyi State, following his declaration that he would not rush to commission projects because he still has “six years” ahead.

Speaking to pressmen on the status of ongoing state projects, the Governor stated:

“I am not in a haste to commission projects. I have done only two years, and by the grace of God, I still have six years. If I start commissioning projects now, it means that I am done.”

While the remark was likely made to express his long-term commitment to thorough project execution, it has also raised eyebrows among political observers and citizens. Some worry that such a statement may subtly imply an assumption of a second term, even though that decision ultimately rests with the electorate.

In a democratic system where public office is earned through periodic elections, many believe that projecting a full eight-year timeline without acknowledging the voters’ role could weaken the spirit of accountability. The concern is not just about rhetoric, but about the mindset behind governance.

Should development wait for a second term?” some residents are asking. Others argue that the Governor’s confidence could stem from political strength and public goodwill, rather than disregard for the democratic process.

During the same press engagement, Governor Nwifuru gave a glimpse into the pressure his team faces behind the scenes.

“I pity the wives of my commissioners. At times I call them during odd hours when leisure should be happening… Some of my commissioners don’t eat well because of the times I call them—2 or 3 a.m.”

While the Governor’s dedication to duty is evident, the focus for many citizens remains on tangible impact. With two years already gone, the public is watching closely—not just for promises of the next six years, but for measurable progress today.
