In a bold step toward enhancing regional connectivity, Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru has flagged off the construction of a 5-span bridge at Enyim Agbaja, linking Izzi Local Government Area of Ebonyi State to Oju Local Government Area of Benue State.
The bridge, once completed, is expected to boost trade and ease transportation between the Southeast and Northern regions of Nigeria, offering faster access to Abuja and surrounding states. According to the Governor, the project carries immeasurable socio-economic benefits for both Ebonyi and Benue.
Governor Nwifuru expressed gratitude to the Benue State Governor, His Excellency Fr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, who pledged to take up the road construction from Oju to Vandeikya once Ebonyi completes the bridge.
“This project means a lot to me,” Nwifuru said, recalling how the Sudan Mission Hospital in Enyim Agbaja saved his life after a motor accident in 1996. He noted that the community also houses institutions like the School of Health, Motherless Babies Home, and School for the Deaf — all of which will benefit from the improved access the bridge will provide.
The Governor commended the Nigerian Army for taking on the technical construction, given the river’s challenging terrain. He also revealed that the road leading to the bridge will be awarded to the same contractor for continuity.
Calling on the people of Enyim Agbaja to support the project fully, Nwifuru urged traditional leaders and residents to work closely with the contractors to ensure timely completion.
The bridge project marks another significant milestone in Ebonyi State’s push for infrastructure development and strategic interstate collaboration.
