Mining Firm Donates Housing to Ebonyi Community in Compliance with Mining Act

Date:

Dolf Global Resources has constructed and handed over three units of three-bedroom bungalows to residents of Amaopara village in Oshiri, Onicha Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, in a move aligned with the provisions of Nigeria’s Mining Act.

Speaking with journalists on Monday in Oshiri, the Managing Director of Dolf Global Resources, Mr. Donald Nnadi, said the gesture was part of the company’s commitment to the Mining Act, which mandates the relocation of individuals living close to mining sites. He emphasized the firm’s dedication to fulfilling all obligations outlined in the Community Development Agreement (CDA) with the host community.

Mr. Nnadi noted that the relationship between the company and the community had remained cordial, owing to his efforts in executing all agreed-upon projects. He mentioned initiatives such as the awarding of scholarships, drilling of boreholes, relocation of residents, and the construction of a hospital, many of which, according to him, were not originally included in the CDA.

Addressing reports suggesting neglect of a family living near the mining site, Mr. Nnadi refuted the claims. He stated that he had a separate Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the family in question and had gone beyond what was stipulated. According to him, he offered to empower one of the family’s sons with a business grant of ₦1 million, on the condition that the family relocate from the mining area. An initial payment of ₦200,000 was made, and further support was promised. He also provided financial assistance to the son’s younger brother to learn a trade.

Mr. Nnadi explained that while the company deals directly with the community leadership in line with existing agreements, it does not interfere with how benefits are shared among individuals. He added that all residents within the mining vicinity are considered tenants to the village and that the village leadership handles internal distributions based on their customs and regulations.

He concluded by stating that, despite not being bound by law to address every individual complaint, he had often gone out of his way to provide additional support for landowners and families in the community, stressing that these acts were voluntary and not mandated by any official agreement.
