A former Permanent Secretary in Ebonyi State and member of the State Independent Electoral Commission, Chief Boniface Mgebu, was brutally attacked by suspected hoodlums while traveling from Abakaliki to his hometown, Noyo Alike in Ikwo Local Government Area.
The attack occurred around 7 p.m. along the Obubura-Enyida Road in Abakaliki Local Government Area. Eyewitnesses revealed that Mgebu’s Hilux vehicle was intercepted by two armed men who attempted to hijack the car. During the struggle, the vehicle veered off the road and caught fire, destroying the car, cash, phones, and other personal belongings.
Chief Mgebu, who is currently receiving treatment at the Alex Ekwueme Federal Teaching Hospital (AE-FUTHA) in Abakaliki, recounted the terrifying ordeal from his hospital bed. According to him, the assailants forcefully entered his vehicle — one with a pistol and the other struggling for control of the steering wheel. As the scuffle intensified, the vehicle crashed into a ditch and immediately went up in flames.
“It’s a miracle I survived,” Mgebu said. “I don’t know whether they ignited the fire or if it was triggered by the car’s fuel, but I managed to escape before the entire vehicle was engulfed.”
He confirmed that the matter has been reported to the police and called on the Ebonyi State Government for assistance with his medical expenses and the replacement of the property lost in the attack.
The Ebonyi State Police Command is yet to release an official statement on the incident as investigations continue.
