The Ebonyi State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) has reactivated its temporary Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps in preparation for potential flooding during the upcoming rainy season.
Mr. Clement Ovuoba, the Executive Secretary of SEMA, shared this update in Abakaliki on Wednesday. The agency’s actions follow the seasonal rainfall forecast and heavy rainfall warning issued by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET), which highlighted Ebonyi among the 30 states expected to experience significant rainfall.
As part of its preparedness, SEMA has launched a public awareness campaign, including jingles, public lectures, and advocacy visits, aimed at preventing flood-related emergencies across the state.
The temporary IDP camps, which can host up to 2,000 individuals, are located across all 13 local government areas of Ebonyi. These camps, set up in churches and school dormitories, serve as emergency shelters for flood victims. Although not designed as permanent camps, they are being used to relocate affected individuals to safety in the event of severe flooding.
Areas frequently affected by flooding, including Ikwo, Izzi, Abakaliki, Afikpo, and Ivo LGAs, have been identified as high-risk zones. Ovuoba urged residents in these areas to avoid building in floodplains, maintain clear drainage systems, and adhere to flood warnings to mitigate the impact of the rainy season.
He also praised Governor Francis Nwifuru and other humanitarian organizations for their continuous support in providing relief and rehabilitation materials to flood victims.
In addition, Ovuoba called for further assistance in the form of vehicles for accessing flood-prone areas, as well as logistical and financial support to ensure a swift and effective response.
“We are taking every precaution to ensure that no emergency catches us unprepared,” Ovuoba assured.
With the rainy season approaching, SEMA remains committed to protecting the lives and property of Ebonyi residents through proactive measures and effective collaboration with key stakeholders.
