The Ebonyi State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has firmly refuted recent claims by Nigeria’s Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, who alleged that there is no longer any formidable opposition in the state.
In a strongly worded statement, Ebonyi PDP Chairman, Mr. Onyemaechi Nwele, described Umahi’s comments as “deliberately misleading,” emphasizing that the PDP remains an active and structured opposition force with a strategic plan to regain political leadership in Ebonyi.
“It is necessary to respond to the claims made by Senator Engr. David Nweze Umahi, former governor of Ebonyi State and current Minister of Works,” Nwele stated. “His assertion that no opposition party exists in the state is a misrepresentation aimed at distorting the political landscape.”
According to Nwele, the PDP retains a solid grassroots presence across the state and is diligently working to rebuild its influence with a clear focus on the 2027 elections. He reaffirmed the party’s commitment to reclaiming the governorship and expanding its seats in the State Assembly through democratic means.
Nwele further criticized Umahi’s political maneuvers, suggesting that the Minister’s support for Governor Francis Nwifuru is less about governance performance and more about positioning himself for a potential political comeback, possibly a Senate seat.
“Senator Umahi’s public alignment with the current administration appears to be driven by personal political ambition as 2027 approaches,” Nwele noted. “However, Ebonyians are politically aware and can distinguish between genuine governance and political gamesmanship.”
The PDP chairman called on party members and supporters to remain focused and undistracted by what he termed “political noise.” He assured them that the PDP is steadily gaining ground and remains a powerful voice in the state’s political arena.
