Felix Okemini, a former Senior Special Assistant on Internal Security to Ebonyi State Governor Francis Nwifuru, was arrested on April 13, 2025, by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Abakaliki. His arrest is linked to serious allegations of cultism and corruption that have sparked public outcry and raised questions about his conduct in both political and academic circles.
Okemini, who was also known as “Jango,” had a controversial history, including a prior expulsion from Ebonyi State College of Education, Ikwo, for cult-related activities. Despite this, he managed to secure a political position as Director of Protocol to the Speaker of the Ebonyi State House of Assembly before his appointment as SSA on Internal Security by Governor Nwifuru in 2023. However, his political tenure took a dark turn when he allegedly orchestrated the illegal seizure and sale of state-owned assets, including heavy machinery and government vehicles, without authorization from the state government. Despite repeated warnings from the governor, these actions continued unchecked, leading to his eventual downfall.
The situation escalated in March 2025 when Okemini attended his matriculation ceremony at Alex Ekwueme Federal University (AE-FUNAI). He was seen surrounded by individuals believed to be cult members, engaging in cult-related gestures that were captured and widely shared on social media. This led to an immediate suspension of his admission, with the university citing a breach of conduct and safety concerns. The decision to revoke his admission sent a clear message about the institution’s zero-tolerance policy toward such behavior.
After being dismissed from his role as SSA and suspended from AE-FUNAI, Okemini reportedly sought reinstatement through the governor, but his request was denied. In retaliation, he allegedly threatened to expose sensitive details about the governor’s involvement in the 2023 elections. This threat, coupled with his previous actions, led to his arrest by NSCDC officials at his residence in Abakaliki.
The arrest of Felix Okemini has drawn attention to issues of corruption and cultism within the political landscape of Ebonyi State. His case highlights the need for strict oversight of public officials and the importance of maintaining ethical standards in government.
As investigations unfold, the case serves as a warning to others in positions of power, stressing the need for transparency and integrity in public office. Okemini’s arrest marks a significant moment in the fight against corruption and criminal behavior within Nigeria’s political system, with authorities taking a firm stance against abuse of power and public trust.
