NDLEA Seizes 56kg of Drugs, Arrests 112 Suspects in Ebonyi

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Ebonyi State Command, has announced the confiscation of 55.947 kilograms of various illicit drugs and the arrest of 112 suspects within the first quarter of 2025. This was made known by the State Commander, Peter Ogar, during a media briefing held in Abakaliki on Wednesday, April 9.

According to Ogar, the arrests and seizures occurred between January and March across different parts of the state. The 112 suspects comprised 85 males and 27 females, ranging in age from 16 to 76 years. The individuals arrested were identified as drug traffickers, users, and dealers.

He further disclosed that the command provided counseling services to 59 individuals within the same period. This group included 45 males and 14 females, all aged between 21 and 76. The counseling sessions formed part of the agency’s efforts to rehabilitate drug users and reintegrate them into society.

The commander detailed the types and quantities of drugs seized, which included 43.582 kilograms of cannabis sativa, 0.004 kilograms of tramadol tablets, 0.400 kilograms of tramadol 100mg capsules (totaling 1,189 capsules), and 0.207 kilograms of diazepam, comprising 988 tablets. Additional substances recovered during the operations included 11.2 litres (equivalent to 11.2 kilograms) of monkey tail, 0.054 kilograms of methamphetamine, 46 tablets (0.020 kilograms) of bromazepam, 84 ampoules (0.244 kilograms) of pentazocine injection, 0.014 kilograms of heroin, and various other psychotropic substances, all summing up to 55.947 kilograms.

During the review period, four convictions were secured. In a related operation, one suspect was apprehended with a locally fabricated pistol and was immediately transferred to the police for appropriate legal action.

Commander Ogar reaffirmed the agency’s determination to strengthen its fight against the menace of drug abuse and illicit trafficking in the state. He also called for increased collaboration and support from stakeholders, including community leaders, parents, and youth organizations.

To further drive home its anti-drug abuse message, the command carried out a series of sensitization campaigns and workshops across all thirteen local government areas of Ebonyi State, targeting especially young people and secondary school students.
