The Abia State Government has alleged that the two Chinese expatriates and their police escort, who were brutally murdered in Uturu, may have been trailed from Ebonyi State.
In a statement issued by the Abia State Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, it was revealed that early investigations point to the possibility that the victims were targeted from a mining site in Ebonyi, particularly around the Izzi region, a well-known hub for foreign-operated mining activities.
The deadly attack, which took place on Sunday, has raised concerns about security in South-East Nigeria, especially along the border areas between Ebonyi and Abia states. While other team members traveling with the victims were safely rescued by security operatives, authorities are intensifying efforts to apprehend the perpetrators.
This is not the first time Ebonyi has made headlines for attacks on expatriates. Previous incidents include the 2022 killing of a Chinese national in Iboko, Izzi LGA, and the 2024 abduction of two others in Ishiagu. These recurring cases have spotlighted the urgent need for improved security in mineral-rich communities.
Although the Ebonyi State Government is yet to respond officially, the incident is fueling calls for a comprehensive review of security measures around mining zones. Locals are urging the government to boost security patrols, especially in areas where foreign nationals are active.
Investigations are ongoing, with security agencies collaborating across states to trace the attackers’ movements and motives. As attention shifts to Ebonyi’s role in the lead-up to the attack, there is growing pressure on both states to enhance intelligence sharing and protect lives and investments in the region.
