Hon. Chinedu Ogah, representing Ikwo/Ezza South Federal Constituency in the National Assembly, has appealed to Anambra State Governor, Prof. Charles Chukwuma Soludo, to restore the original name of Abakaliki Street in Awka, which was recently renamed “Club Road.”
Describing the name change as a slight against Ebonyi State, Hon. Ogah emphasized the importance of preserving mutual respect and unity between the two Southeastern states. He warned that if the decision isn’t reversed, Ebonyi may be compelled to rename streets in its capital that bear Anambra-linked names.
“It’s surprising that a single street named after Ebonyi in Anambra is now erased, despite the fact that over 100 streets in Ebonyi are named after various Anambra towns,” Ogah stated. “We have Awka Street, Onitsha Street, and others in Abakaliki that remain untouched.”
Ogah, who chairs the House Committee on Correctional Services, stressed that Ebonyi has consistently welcomed Anambra citizens—offering them leadership roles, political appointments, land, and business opportunities. He cited prominent Anambra indigenes like Spera-In-Deo, Tycoon, and Nnolum, who have thrived and invested in Ebonyi, often with roads and streets named after them.
He also pointed to historical tensions, recalling how an Ebonyi native was allegedly prevented from contesting a local election in Nnewi, calling for fair treatment and inclusion of Ebonyians living in Anambra State.
“Governor Soludo should act swiftly to restore the name ‘Abakaliki Street’ as a gesture of goodwill and brotherhood,” Ogah urged. “Mutual recognition and inclusivity are key to regional peace and development.”
