Ebonyi Communal Crisis: Four Reported Dead as Tensions Flare Between Amasiri and Osso Edda

Date:

Tragedy struck in Ebonyi State as renewed violence between two neighboring communities—Ndukwe in Amasiri (Afikpo LGA) and Okporojo in Osso Edda (Edda LGA)—resulted in the deaths of four people and the destruction of several properties.

Sources within Okporojo allege that the attack originated from Amasiri, although this remains unverified by independent authorities. The unrest, tied to a long-standing land ownership disagreement, has left many residents fearful, with some now avoiding Amasiri roads and taking longer routes through Afikpo for safety.

This clash is the latest in a dispute that has spanned several decades. Despite previous government interventions, including policy recommendations by a committee under the former administration, the crisis has persisted due to lack of enforcement.

Chairman of Edda LGA, Hon. Chima Ekumankama, confirmed the loss of four lives during the attack on Okporojo Idima and assured that law enforcement agents are now on ground to stabilize the area.

“I visited the community myself and saw the destruction. Thanks to the quick response from Governor Francis Nwifuru, security presence has been significantly increased to prevent further violence,” Ekumankama said.

His counterpart in Afikpo LGA, Hon. Timothy Nwachi, also acknowledged the deployment of officers to the disputed boundary to ease tensions. He called on residents, especially those in Amasiri, to remain peaceful as the government addresses the matter.

As of now, police authorities say they are yet to receive an official briefing on the incident.
