NUJ @ 70: Journalists Are the Backbone of Society — Governor Nwifuru

Date:

The Ebonyi State Chapter of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) on Friday joined the rest of the country in commemorating the 70th anniversary of the esteemed union.

Representing the Governor of Ebonyi State, His Excellency Rt. Hon. Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, I extended the warmest congratulations of the state government to the NUJ, commending its steadfast dedication to promoting truth, transparency, accountability, and democratic values over the past seven decades.

“For 70 remarkable years, the Nigerian Union of Journalists has remained a symbol of integrity—amplifying public voices, holding leaders accountable, and shaping national conversations with fairness and courage,” I noted during the event.

I emphasized that in an age where misinformation spreads rapidly, the commitment to ethical, factual, and responsible journalism is more critical than ever before.

During my address, I encouraged media practitioners to uphold the standards of the profession by resisting the urge to rely solely on social media as a primary news source. Such practice, I cautioned, is unethical and contradicts journalistic principles.

I also reiterated the Ebonyi State Government’s willingness to continue partnering with the NUJ to drive societal progress and development. I assured the union of our continued support in ensuring a free, secure, and enabling environment for journalists to operate.

As the union celebrates this significant milestone, I once again congratulated them and wished the NUJ many more years of impactful service, excellence, and unwavering dedication to truth.
