The David Umahi Federal University Teaching Hospital (DUFUTH) in Uburu, Ohaozara Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, has regained stability after a period of unrest involving the host community over administrative concerns. Chief Medical Director (CMD) Professor Uzoma Agwu resumed duty on April 2, 2025, receiving a warm reception from hospital staff.
The institution recently faced operational disruptions due to protests and counter-protests regarding leadership decisions. However, swift intervention from key stakeholders, including Ebonyi State Governor Francis Nwifuru and Minister of Works David Umahi, helped restore order.
Upon her arrival at the hospital’s main complex, Prof. Agwu was met with enthusiastic chants from staff members, expressing their support. “We stand with Professor Agwu,” one staff member declared. In her speech, she extended appreciation to President Bola Tinubu, Governor Nwifuru, and Minister Umahi for their pivotal roles in resolving the crisis. She reaffirmed her commitment to elevating DUFUTH as a premier healthcare institution in Nigeria.
“Healthcare remains a priority in President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, and we are dedicated to advancing this vision,” she emphasized.
Prof. Agwu also acknowledged Minister Umahi’s instrumental efforts in steering the hospital through challenges. Addressing past concerns regarding absenteeism, she praised the staff’s strong presence as a testament to their dedication.
To preserve the hospital’s history and resilience, she proposed creating a record featuring staff members’ names and photographs.
Last week, hospital staff staged a counter-protest to express their unwavering support for Prof. Agwu, rejecting allegations made by the host community. This marked a turning point in the situation, leading to renewed stability.
Hospital leadership encourages staff to remain committed and uphold transparency, ensuring DUFUTH continues to deliver exceptional healthcare services to the people of Ebonyi State and beyond.
