The Human Rights and Conflict Resolution Centre (HRCRC) has called on Ebonyi State’s local government authorities to prioritize the continuation of Children’s Parliament activities in a bid to foster inclusive governance. This appeal was made during an advocacy session focused on the importance of involving children in governance and giving them a platform to voice their concerns. HRCRC’s Executive Director, George Etamesor, emphasized that local government leaders must take responsibility for ensuring these initiatives are well-funded, structured, and sustainable, enabling them to have a meaningful impact on young people’s lives.
Held in Afikpo Local Government Area (LGA), the HRCRC event allowed children from different areas to engage in discussions on key issues such as education, health, and their rights. The session involved a mock legislative process where children proposed and debated policies on these topics. Etamesor highlighted that such engagements not only educate children about governance but also empower them to contribute to policies that affect their communities.
HRCRC envisions establishing a statewide children’s parliament, which would serve as a permanent forum for young citizens to engage in governance. Etamesor underscored that empowering children today is essential for building a more democratic and active society in the future. “By investing in children’s participation now, we are laying the groundwork for tomorrow’s leaders,” he said.
Despite the promising initiative, there are concerns regarding the long-term sustainability of children’s parliaments, particularly due to challenges with funding and political will. Etamesor urged both governmental and non-governmental organizations to provide ongoing support to ensure the continuity of the program. He also called for the integration of children’s parliaments into local governance structures to ensure they remain an enduring part of the democratic process.
