NNPC, BERWO Foundation Offer Free Cataract Screenings and Surgeries in Ebonyi

Date:

The NNPC Foundation, in collaboration with the Better Health for Rural Women, Children, and Internally Displaced Persons Foundation (BERWO), has launched a free cataract screening and surgery program in Ebonyi State. This initiative, conducted in partnership with the Ebonyi State Ministry of Health, is part of a broader healthcare outreach covering Ebonyi, Imo, Abia, and Anambra States.

Designed to combat preventable blindness, this medical intervention provides free screenings and cataract surgeries at three major healthcare centers in Ebonyi: General Hospital Elinwovu (Abakaliki LGA), General Hospital Onueke (Ezza South LGA), and General Hospital Iboko (Izzi LGA). The outreach runs from April 1st to April 4th, delivering much-needed eye care to residents at no cost.

BERWO Foundation, spearheaded by Ebonyi State’s First Lady, Mrs. Mary-Maudline Nwifuru, has played a crucial role in organizing and supporting this initiative. Representing BERWO Foundation, Prof. Nkechi Emma-Echiegu expressed appreciation to the NNPC Foundation and the Ebonyi State Ministry of Health for their dedication to improving healthcare accessibility.

“We sincerely appreciate the NNPC Foundation for leading this initiative and the dedicated medical professionals who volunteered their expertise. This project demonstrates our commitment to enhancing healthcare services, and we look forward to future collaborations,” said Prof. Emma-Echiegu.

Dr. Anne Njoku Amugo, speaking on behalf of the NNPC Foundation, emphasized the organization’s dedication to supporting healthcare programs that benefit underserved communities. “Cataract-related vision loss is preventable, and through this initiative, we aim to restore sight and improve lives,” she stated.

Local leaders and beneficiaries have commended the project, acknowledging the impact of free screenings and surgeries. Community figures such as Chief Sylvester Okoro, Chief Emmanuel Nwiboko, and Mrs. Theresa Awada praised Mrs. Nwifuru for facilitating this vital healthcare intervention in Ebonyi State.

The NNPC Foundation remains committed to corporate social responsibility projects that enhance healthcare, education, and economic empowerment. This initiative underscores its dedication to improving lives through strategic partnerships and sustainable medical programs.
