Education in Ebonyi: Are Public Schools Getting the Attention They Deserve?

Date:

Public schools are meant to provide quality education to all, regardless of background. However, in Ebonyi State, the condition of public schools suggests they may not be receiving the attention they deserve. While the government has made efforts to improve the sector, issues like poor infrastructure, inadequate funding, and teacher shortages continue to hinder learning at the primary, secondary, and tertiary levels.

The State of Primary and Secondary Schools

Public primary and secondary schools in Ebonyi face significant challenges. Many schools lack basic facilities such as well-equipped classrooms, science laboratories, and libraries. Rural schools, in particular, struggle with teacher shortages, with some schools having as few as four teachers handling multiple subjects across different grades.

Additionally, overcrowded classrooms and poorly maintained school buildings affect both teaching and learning. Many students sit on bare floors, and schools lack running water or proper sanitation. While the government recently announced the upgrade of 39 secondary schools into model colleges, questions remain about how sustainable this initiative is, considering the longstanding neglect of public schools.

Ebonyi State University: Education or Survival?

At the tertiary level, Ebonyi State University (EBSU) highlights even deeper systemic problems. As a state-funded institution, it is supposed to be affordable and well-equipped. However, students face harsh learning conditions, outdated facilities, and frequent disruptions.

Key challenges include:

  • Lack of modern laboratories – Medical students struggle to access cadavers, and science students work with outdated equipment.
  • Overcrowded lecture halls – A single lecturer may handle multiple courses for hundreds of students in halls that can barely accommodate them.
  • Unpredictable academic calendar – Lecturers often cancel classes last-minute, leading to low attendance and poor learning outcomes.
  • Tuition fee disparities – Non-indigenes pay significantly higher fees, even though facilities remain underfunded.

These issues raise concerns about whether students are truly receiving the education they paid for or simply enduring an academic journey with little reward.

Government Efforts: A Drop in the Ocean?

The Ebonyi State government has initiated policies to improve public education, including:

  • Upgrading selected schools to model colleges.
  • Organizing Spelling Bee competitions to boost academic engagement.
  • Conducting perimeter surveys to prevent school land encroachment

While these are positive steps, they do not address core problems such as:

  • Insufficient funding – Schools still lack basic resources.
  • Teacher shortages – Many schools, especially in rural areas, are severely understaffed.
  • Substandard school buildings – Poorly executed construction projects continue to pose risks.

Are Public Schools Truly Getting the Attention They Deserve?

If ‘attention’ is measured by government recognition, then public schools have received some focus through recent policies. However, if ‘attention’ means consistent funding, infrastructure development, and quality education, then the answer is no—Ebonyi’s public schools are still struggling.

For real progress, the government must:

  • Increase education funding to improve facilities and provide necessary resources.
  • Hire and retain more qualified teachers, especially in rural schools.
  • Enforce strict monitoring of school projects to prevent substandard construction.
  • Encourage private-sector partnerships to support public education.

Until these steps are taken, Ebonyi’s public schools will continue to lag behind, leaving students underprepared for the future.
