Security operatives have apprehended a member of the Ebonyi State market taskforce after a violent altercation with a soldier at the Abakaliki International Market.
The clash reportedly began when the taskforce demanded a ₦5,000 loading and offloading fee from a military officer, Nwuzor Elias, who was at the market for personal shopping. Despite explaining that he was not engaged in loading or offloading activities, the taskforce insisted on payment.
Tensions escalated, leading to a physical confrontation in which both the soldier and some taskforce members sustained injuries. Military reinforcements arrived shortly after, arresting one of the taskforce officials while others managed to escape.
The Nigerian Army has yet to issue an official statement regarding the arrest, but the incident has sparked fresh concerns among traders and shoppers over the aggressive tactics used by market enforcers. Many are calling on the state government to regulate their activities and prevent further conflicts.
