The Ebonyi State Government has confirmed the arrest of Emmanuel Acha, a social media influencer, for allegedly making defamatory statements against security agencies in the state.
Tobias Ogbonna, Special Adviser on Security to Governor Francis Nwifuru, revealed to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that Acha was taken into custody on March 18, 2025. He is accused of spreading false information regarding the security situation in Effium and Ezza-Effium communities, which have a history of violent conflicts.
Effium and Ezza-Effium Crisis: A Brief Overview
The Effium and Ezza-Effium communities in Ohaukwu Local Government Area have been plagued by communal clashes from 2021 to 2024, resulting in significant casualties and destruction. Governor Nwifuru spearheaded peace initiatives and, in February 2025, granted amnesty to some individuals previously incarcerated for their involvement in the crisis.
Despite the government’s peacekeeping efforts, Acha allegedly shared misleading content on social media, which authorities believe could destabilize the region. According to Ogbonna, his remarks were classified as “offensive and harmful,” leading to his detention.
Government’s Position on the Arrest
Ogbonna stressed the importance of supporting state policies and maintaining peace rather than inciting unrest.
“He was arrested, arraigned in court, and subsequently transferred to the Abakaliki Correctional Centre,” Ogbonna stated. “We must work together to uphold government policies and foster unity in Ebonyi State.”
Meanwhile, Ebonyi State’s Commissioner for Internal Security, Etta Uka-Ude, distanced himself from the arrest, declining further comments on the matter.
