In a bid to foster peace and economic empowerment, the Ebonyi State Government, in partnership with the Nigerian Army’s 82 Division, has successfully trained and graduated 51 youths from a joint disarmament, reorientation, and skills acquisition program. The graduation ceremony took place on March 20, 2025, at the Ezillo Military Barracks in Ishielu Local Government Area.
The initiative focused on youths from Ekoli, Edda Local Government Area, who had previously laid down their arms following a long-standing land dispute with the Egbor community in Biase Local Government Area, Cross River State. The program aimed to reintegrate them into society by providing them with essential vocational skills.
Speaking at the event, Governor Francis Nwifuru reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to promoting peace and economic growth. As part of the rehabilitation process, he granted amnesty to the graduates and announced a ₦2 million business grant for each participant to help them establish sustainable livelihoods.
“Our government is committed to reducing unemployment and insecurity by equipping young people with practical skills and business opportunities,” said Nwifuru. “This program is a testament to our vision for a more peaceful and prosperous Ebonyi State.”
The initiative has been widely praised by security analysts and development experts, who emphasize the role of skills acquisition and entrepreneurship training in combating youth restiveness and enhancing economic stability. Research continues to show that such programs are crucial in tackling unemployment and fostering long-term peace.
With this empowerment scheme, the Ebonyi State Government and the Nigerian Army are reinforcing their commitment to sustainable development, security, and economic inclusion through continuous youth-focused initiatives.
